Bathroom traps – what are the differences between traps for wash basins, bathtubs and shower trays?

A trap is a highly important component of a bathroom drainage system. Its basic tasks include waste water drainage to the drain stack and holding sewage system odours. The traps are installed at the drains of wash basins, bathtubs, shower trays and bidets.

Although all bathroom traps play the same role, they differ in terms of appearance, size and diameter of installation openings. Some bathroom traps, e.g. copper wash basin ones, provide decoration as well and so they are left exposed on purpose.

Traps with no decorative function are made from synthetic materials, e.g. polypropylene, and installed in concealed places, including cabinets under the wash basins. However, when installing it is worth ensuring comfortable access to them so that you have enough space in the case of any failure.

Bathroom trap types

If you have been looking for a bathroom trap for some time, you must have noticed that there are several types of such traps on the market with different intended use, but also structure and size. The most popular trap types include bottle traps and P-traps. What is more, we can choose from non-standard traps, with a unique, designer’s shape, and specialist traps. This is why you should not select the trap hastily. On the contrary, you should analyse many aspects, including e.g. the available space and the nature and use of the room.

Bottle traps (vertical ones) are usually installed in small rooms, e.g. toilets and bathrooms with limited space. Their characteristic feature is a water container with the shape resembling a bottle.

P-traps (horizontal ones), due to their greater width, entail much lower risk of clogging than the bottle ones which is why they are frequently used in boiler rooms, amenity rooms and kitchens. Their shape resembles a U-shaped pipe.

Non-standard traps are distinguished by their unique appearance and unconventional size. They are designed not only to be practical, but also to be an interior design component in a room e.g. inspired by the industrial style.

Specialist traps are mostly made for the physically disabled people. The solutions, including elongated, horizontal shape or concealed drain, ensures more space under the wash basin.

Trap installation in the bathroom – what should you know?

Trap installation in the bathroom is not difficult and can be carried out by yourself just following the included instructions. The only thing you need to remember is the selection of the model corresponding to the wash basin diameter. When you manage to find it, you can start. Trap components should be joined tightly, until you feel clear resistance to prevent any leakage when you use the wash basin. You should also ensure that you use washers wherever they are required. If you place them flat and carefully, you may be certain that the system will remain reliable for a long time.

Trap replacement is required only in rare cases. If you keep it unobstructed e.g. by using strainers catching impurities and, whenever required, by using chemicals to unclog the pipes, you can guarantee its efficiency for a long time.

A trap for a countertop wash basin

In Axis, you will find a lot of practical wash basin traps with robust workmanship and reliable function. Investing in them, you can be certain that you select the best solution among the ones available on the market and that you will be able to enjoy its defect-free function for many years.

Countertop wash basins have been really trendy in recent years. For them, all drainage system components are installed in the cabinet below. However, you may opt for a decorative non-standard trap for the countertop wash basin and expose it under the top, getting an interesting interior design component.

Both countertop and other wash basins need a click-clack plug as well to block water drainage from the bowl. There are plastic click-clack plugs on the market, but they are highly prone to defects and not durable. In Axis, you will find practical metal click-clack plugs which can be used trouble free for many years.
